Georgia Launches Largest Infrastructure Project in State History: SR 400 Express Lanes
Transformational investment to improve mobility, drive economic growth and strengthen metro Atlanta’s future

NORTH FULTON, Ga. – April 23, 2026 – State, federal and regional leaders celebrated the official launch of the SR 400 Express Lanes project, marking a historic milestone for Georgia’s transportation network and economic future. As the largest state investment in infrastructure in Georgia’s history, the project will deliver critical congestion relief, enhance regional connectivity and support long-term growth across metro Atlanta.
Leaders from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA), U.S. Department of Transportation, SR 400 Peach Partners and True North 400 joined nearly 300 business and community stakeholders to commemorate the launch and highlight the project’s transformative impact with a groundbreaking ceremony.
“This is more than a groundbreaking — it’s a milestone for the future of North Fulton and the entire metro Atlanta region,” said Tim Perry, Board Chair of True North 400. “The SR 400 Express Lanes project reflects years of collaboration and a shared commitment to improving mobility, strengthening our economy and enhancing quality of life.”
The project will add new express lanes along one of Georgia’s most critical corridors, improving travel times and reliability for commuters while supporting a vital jobs corridor that connects businesses, workforce and communities.
“This investment underscores Georgia’s commitment to innovative, forward-looking infrastructure,” said Russell McMurry, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation. “Through strong partnerships and a proven public-private project delivery model, we are building express lanes that will maximize efficiency, accelerate timelines and ensure responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.”
The SR 400 Express Lanes project is being delivered through a public-private partnership, bringing together state, federal and private-sector expertise to accelerate construction and optimize long-term performance. The project also includes one of the largest federal infrastructure loans in U.S. history through the TIFIA program, underscoring its national significance.
In addition to reducing congestion, the project is designed with the future in mind — supporting multimodal transportation and enhancing regional connectivity across metro Atlanta.
“Today’s SR 400 Express Lanes groundbreaking marks a major milestone for one of the most heavily congested corridors in metro Atlanta,” said Jannine Miller, executive director – SRTA and director of planning – GDOT. “With Peach Pass already delivering faster, more reliable travel to more than 1 million customers across three corridors since 2011, we are excited to bring the benefits of reliable infrastructure to this vital corridor.”
The corridor also plays a key role in Georgia’s continued economic success, particularly along the region’s growing technology and business hubs.
True North 400 leaders emphasized the long-term community impact, including enhancements along key east-west corridors such as Holcomb Bridge and North Point, and the broader vision of a more connected and economically vibrant region.
“This investment is elevating a corridor that supports businesses, connects communities and fuels long-term prosperity,” said Kristin Winzeler, executive director of True North 400. “This project represents the future of North Fulton — vibrant, accessible and economically strong.”
Construction has begun, with continued community engagement and updates planned throughout the process.
